First impressions: Muslims in Dublin?

Monday February 17th. 18905 steps.

Traveling as a Muslim is difficult. Where do you find halal food? Where is the nearest prayer place? How do the locals react towards Muslims?

Do not fear: Dublin is Muslim friendly!

Today was my first day in Dublin and I noticed there are a lot of trendy and hip cafes where you can find something to eat, either vegan or vegetarian. Our first lunch spot was ‘Laine, my love’.

Irish food is more than potatoes and meat. Ireland is an island and it has great seafood. Try some fresh oysters, clams, prawns or mussels.

There are prayer rooms in every big city. You can pray in your hotel room but do not let that limit you from visiting the local mosque. The Dublin Mosque is quite a beautiful building.

In most big European cities, like Dublin, you can find people from around the world. As a hijab wearing Muslim, I did not notice people taking a second glance or staring at me weirdly.

We visited the Guinness Storehouse and even though I do not drink alcohol, it was an educational and fun experience. Besides Guinness, there are also soft drinks and non-alcoholic beer. Instead of focusing on the beer culture, you could concentrate on the tea culture. Most Irish people start their day with a nice hot cup of tea and drink some throughout the day. Go and taste test different cups of tea and finally settle the debate. Barry’s or Lyons?
